Summary on Grant Application Form
Significant gains in understanding mechanical property/physical structure relationships in oriented and defined polymers will be pursued starting from a particularly favourable situation. Prior work has shown that permanganic etching can reveal unprecedented detail in high performance - and, by implication, in other polyethylene fibres. Moreover, a new CM20 advanced electron microscope, fully equipped for diffraction microscopy of beam sensitive materials, is available to study molecular orientation within the morphology. It is intended to pursue two principal approaches. The structure of existing fibres and melt-crystallised polymers will be evaluated as quantitatively as possible and correlated with a wide spectrum of mechanical properties. Secondly, the processes involved in the formation of fibrous, shish-kebab structures will be studied on cross-linked polyethylene crystallising from the melt. Together the two approaches should reveal those aspects of morphology which are significant for properties and how their formation can be controlled.
