Summary on Grant Application Form |
To better our understanding of the plasma polymerisation process and to utilise this process to synthesise thin polymer films containing high concentrations of specific chemical functionalities. We propose to concentrate on the relationship between the chemistry of the polymerising gas and the structure of the resultant polymer. The polymerising gas will be subject to mass analysis, whilst the polymer product will be subject to analysis by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy (ToF SIMS). We also propose to synthesise films rich in only one specific functionality by minimising monomer fragmentation and rearrangement in the plasma. This will be achieved by manipulation of the plasma parameters, power (W) and flow rate (F). In particular, through the polymerisation of phosphate and sulphate containing monomers, we propose to synthesise films/coatings rich in these functionalities.
