Summary on Grant Application Form
The research programme centres on hot deformation in a computer controlled universal testing machine, which enables tests to be carried out with a reversal in sign of straining from tension to compression, or vice versa at predetermined strains. The research materials are Type 316L stainless steel and aluminium-1% magnesium. The programme will be carried out in two main phases: (i) testing in tension-tension, compression-compression, tension-compression and compression-tension with identical cycles in strain rate between the two steps, and subsequent holding to allow partial recrystallisation. This phase will establish the magnitude of the Bauschinger effect, assess its sensitivity to the strain rate cycle, and show whether the retardation of recrystallisation depends only on the reversal of sign of straining or on the sequence under hot deformation conditions. (ii) testing in compression followed by tension or compression, followed by rapid cooling for TEM of the evolution of dislocation structures, or by annealing for different times to determine the recrystallisation kinetics by quantitative optical microscopy. This phase will determine the effect of the magnitude of the second strain on the microstructure developed during and after deformation.
