Summary on Grant Application Form |
The research will have two main parts. The first is theoretical and will extend an existing programme on pure iron to ferritic alloys. It involves the molecular dynamics simulation of the generation and evolution of displacement cascades. It will require the development of many-body interatomic potentials for Fe-Cu, Fe-Au, Fe-Cu-Mn, etc and will be aimed at identifying the mechanisms by which solutes influence cascades and defect survival. Also, it will be concerned with the ways in which solutes precipitate, and the processes by which radiation damage limits precipitate growth. The second part is experimental, and will be an investigation of the influence of alloy content on cascade collapse in ferritic steels. This will be carried out by TEM on ion-irradiated alloys. A further study will attempt to investigate structural and irradiation-related effects in model samples of these alloys produced by metal deposition. A named postdoctoral assistant has expertise in these areas.
