Summary on Grant Application Form
The primary aim of the programme is to define the mechanisms for the formation of the ordered Ti3Al(2) phase from the disordered solid solution () in aluminium-rich titanium-aluminium alloys. An understanding of this reaction will have two important consequences both commercial and scientific; embrittlement of existing near- titanium alloys post creep exposure is associated with 2 precipitation. It is essential to the understanding of current alloys and to the development of new ones that this reaction is understood. Secondly, the work will provide a more precise assessment of the titanium-aluminium phase diagram which is important in its own right but also as a basis against which thermodynamic models for titanium-aluminium can be assessed. Additionally, it will contribute to an understanding of conditional phase transitions. The nature of the techniques planned emphasise the need for detailed microstructural characterisation. Conventional and high resolution electron microscopy will provide detailed structural information. Field ion microscopy/atom probe analysis will be used to obtain fine-scale compositional data.
