Summary on Grant Application Form |
The aim of this proposal is to investigate the application of pyrrole derivatives in the design of a solid-state bioelectronic interface, involving direct electron transfer between immobilised proteins and modified electrodes. Pyrrole derivatives and amino acid modified pyrrole derivatives will be synthesised de novo and will be electropolymerised to form homo and heteropolymeric films. Quantitive characterisation of the composition of the heteropolymeric films will be carried out using FTIB, FABS-MS and amino acid analysis. Cytochrome c, microperoxidase, plastocyanin, and ferredoxin will be entrapped in these novel derivatised conducting polymer films, and the electron transfer processes at the protein-matrix interface will be studied electrochemically. The novel polymers will mimic the protein-protein interfaces seen in nature and will promote direct electron transfer with the immobilised protein. STM will be used to visualise the orientation of the biological material at the conducting polymer interface.
