Summary on Grant Application Form |
Ceramics from polymeric precursors exhibit internal reactions, crystallization and grain growth phenomena above 1000C. The processes are not well understood even though this is essential to the control of properties. The applicants have recently shown that an open nanoporous network is developed on crystallization of a non-stoichiometric SiC from a polycarbosilane and this is retained even at 1700C. Such porosity is probably characteristic of these materials and may be the cause of strength degradation in fibres. However, nanoporous materials may also form a new range of highly refractory adsorbents and catalyst supports. Thus, the structural origins and nature of the porosity will be elucidated using gas adsorption, high resolution transmission electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction. A range of polymer-based ceramics within the system Si-O-C-N-Ti-B will be used to study the kinetics of pore growth and crystallization as a function of temperature, atmosphere and initial composition. Sinter-ability at higher temperatures will also be assess. The information will be an important contribution to the understanding of structural control in this class of ceramics.
