Summary on Grant Application Form |
The aim of the research is to produce molecular magnets based on our recently discovered synthetic route which enables us to trap iron oxyhydroxide frameworks as cluster molecules. Since these are known to display cooperative magnetic phenomena the two major aims are to synthesise and characterise by x-ray diffraction other examples and to measure magnetic properties such as susceptibility and magnetisation in order to design new synthetic strategies for future compounds. The magnetic interactions in molecules of this size can only be described empirically at present. We will seek a means of quantifying magnetic behaviour in such systems. This will involve comparing data obtained from MCD, susceptibility, EPR, and INS measurements. We will also investigate the synthesis and properties of heterometallic and mixed oxidation state compounds of this type in order to produce ferrimagnetic exchange phenomena.
