Summary on Grant Application Form
Some of the transport properties of metal/ceramic interfaces may be explained by a sessile interface defect arrangement. Evidence of anomalous transport at Ni/ZrO2, Cu/ZrO2 and Al/Al2O3 interfaces will be investigated using void closure during diffusion bonding as a model system. Transmission electron microscopy studies of these interfaces (HREM and conventional techniques) will be used to characterise interface structures in these systems, first using model interfaces produced by internal oxidation, then progressing via interfaces produced by thin film evaporation to fabricate bonded metal/ceramic interfaces. Interface structure will be used to interpret interface diffusion behaviour. Interdiffusion and kirkendal void formation at metal/Si3N4 interfaces will be investigated. The use of strong nitride forming additions to form in situ diffusion barriers will also be studied.
