Summary on Grant Application Form
A range of polymers of commercial significance will be synthesised containing monomer units bearing attached boron or silicon-containing groups. The flame-retardance of these polymers will be compared with those of similar materials containing conventional flame-retardant additives. It is expected, based on previous work at Lancaster, that the chemically modified polymers will exhibit significant flame-retardance. The mechanisms of flame-retardance will be explored using a combination of techniques including LOI measurements, DSC and TGA experiments, measurements of char yields, determination of char structures, and analysis of smokes and vapours. It is expected that the work will provide important pointers for the synthesis of improved flame-retardant polymer-based materials.
