Summary on Grant Application Form |
A series of 3-substituted thiophene monomers will be synthesised and then electropolymerised at a gold electrode. After electrochemical undoping and thermal/vacuum annealing each polymer will be characterised using our well established techniques eg interferometry for determining film thickness, scanning electron microscopy for film morphology and current-voltage and ac admittance measurements for determining the electrical quality of the films. From this data the polymerisation conditions for each polymer will be optimised. Having obtained good quality films, the mobility of holes in each polymer will be measured directly by time-of-flight measurements using a pulsed electron-beam to generate free holes in the film. The nature of hole transport will be determined by noting the field and temperature-dependences of the hole mobility. Charge trapping in this class of polymer will be investigated by thermally-stimulated current and photo-stimulated current techniques having initially used the electron-beam to populate traps at liquid nitrogen temperatures.
