The programme of research consists of three related projects. All projects are concerned with the investigation of structure and/or molecular motion, in molecular and ionic solids. The principal tool used is solid-state NMR. The projects are:1. Molecular motion in solids: involves the study of molecular motion in two particularly important areas of chemistry: (i) intercalation compounds and (ii) polymers. The effects of the motion of guest molecules upon host structure of intercalation compounds and diffusion through the host are being studied. The effects of polymer mobility on the bulk material structure and phase transitions are being investigated.2. Structure of glasses and molecular sieve catalysts: various one- and two-dimensional solid-state NMR techniques are to be used to elucidate structures of various amorphous materials and molecular sieves important in catalysis. Also important is the study of ionic dynamics in ionically-conducting glasses.3. Use of metal-ligand interactions to control the assembly of supramolecular and polymeric materials. NMR will be used to study ligand dynamics as well as to structurally characterise reaction products
