The development of high-nitrogen stainless steels has followed the path of empirical modification of non-nitrogen grades of austenitic and ferritic or martensitic types and utilising pressure melting or ESR to retain nitrogen in the solid steel. The present work seeks to establish the thermodynamic parameters for the liquid steel by experiment and utilise the published parameters for the solid to develop a range of duplex stainless steels for foundry casting. These steels will then combine the mechanical properties conferred by the duplex microstructure with the increased strength and aqueous corrosion resistance derived from nitrogen alloying in materials which may be cast using existing technology at normal pressure. The thermodynamic parameters derived for nitrogen will add to the existing computer-based data which may be used for the prediction of a wide range of stainless steel compositions and grades.
