Summary on Grant Application Form |
To identify the requirements for a strong interface and ductile interphase for improving the reinforcing efficiency of short E-glass fibres in injection moulded phenolic composites. This will be achieved by studying the micromechanics, using single embedded filament fragmentation and multiple matrix cracking of unidirectional composites, of model systems containing well defined silanised and coated fibres. Surface analysis will be used to study in detail the microchemistry of the efficient system(s). The dependence of fibre length on the strength of aligned and random short fibre injection mouldings will be used to confirm the translation of understanding to real systems. Consider the improvements in the context of fibre length protection during moulding and reductions in the critical length of the fibre in the matrix. Comparison of the effectiveness of a thermoplastic, rubber or epoxy resin modifier as a coating of matrix additive to provide understanding of the strengthening effect.
