Summary on Grant Application Form |
When high power pulses are focused onto solid targets, extremely bright sub-nanosecond x-ray pulses are produced, which can be used to obtain single-shot sub-nanosecond x-ray diffraction data. We propose to use in situ picosecond x-ray diffraction to directly study laser-shocked materials. We will address the specific problems of the fracture strength of materials at ultra-high strain-rates, plastic response at the impact surface, shock induced polymorphic phase transitions, and the finite width of the shock front.
