Summary on Grant Application Form
Tensile and comprehensive yield, stress relaxation, and fracture will be studied in toughened plastics containing impact modifiers based on polybutadiene. Specifically, PMMA, PSAN, PC and PBT will be melt-blended with MBS and ABS modifiers. Before blending, these modifiers will be subjected to controlled crosslinking using high energy radiation. Samples of high impact polystyrene will be irradiated directly. Two major effects of crosslinking are expected: (a) an increased resistance to particle cavitation, resulting in a increase in tensile yield stress and an upward shift in the brittle-tough impact transition; and (b) an increase in the load-bearing capacity of the rubber particles after they have cavitated, with a resulting retardation in tensile stress relaxation of the polymer in the post-yield condition. Analysis of the data will be based on composite materials models, with the highly-stretched rubber particles in parallel with the strain-softened yield zones of the matrix. Detailed features of the deformation and failure processes will be examined using transmission electron microscopy of ultrathin sections.
