Summary on Grant Application Form |
Orientation of the molecular structure in a tube may be achieved in the continuous die drawing process by drawing an isotropic tube made from raw material over an expanding mandrel at a temperature below the melt, with the polymer in the solid phase. This process produces products with enhanced strength in both the axial and hoop directions. Research is directed at gaining a fundamental understanding of the mechanics of this process and exploring how the physical properties of drawn tubes, especially stiffness and strength, relate to the deformation of the polymer and its final structure. The mechanics analysis will determine the 3-dimensional stress-strain state of an element of material as it progresses over the expanding mandrel and this will enable the potential of the process to be identified in terms of the range of hoop and axial draw ratios achievable. The hoop and axial modulus of drawn tube will be individually determined and related to structural characteristics determined from x-ray diffraction and other physical measurements (continuation of GR/E 76972).
