Summary on Grant Application Form
Polymeric pipe linings for cast iron water mains are currently comprised of full thickness pressure pipe. Taking account of the fact that the lining has only to span small voids in the host pipe could lead to the use of thin walled linings that would reduce cost, increase pipe capacity, and reduce corrosion of the host pipe. The potential for thin walled linings has been established using laboratory and visco plastic numerical stress analysis technques under SERC grant GR/F60298. The proposed programme will use the same methodology to investigate jointing effects, new installation technqiues and new materials; this will complete the work necessary to quantify performance under internal hydrostatic pressure. To assess whether cyclic traffic loading can cause any significant additional degradation in strength, a further series of numerical studies and laboratory tests will be conducted. The proposed programme will be undertaken in collabortion with both the plastic pipe and water supply industries, thus ensuring the relevance of the programme to present industrial needs. This work will also make a significant contribution to the development of generalised procedures for the assessment of structural plastics.
