Summary on Grant Application Form |
The Programme of research proposed embraces three interconnected threads.(1) Analysis and Computation. Tribological analysis and software for piston ring packs will be further developed. The effects of ring dynamics, ring lubrication and wear will be considered simultaneously and modern ring pack configurations (including a plane downward scraping ring) incorporated.(2) Laboratory experiments. A single cylinder motored engine apparatus will be modified by fitting it with capacitance transducers to monitor the developing shape of the rings without interrupting running.(3) Firing Engine Tests. A new single cylinder test engine will be used to monitor the development of ring face profiles by intermittently stripping the engine and making measurements in our Metrology Laboratory. Validation of the model developed against data from two sources will be achieved.
