Summary on Grant Application Form |
Static tests will be undertaken to establish how fibre direction strength varies with stress distribution and specimen size. Waisted specimens with a very large radius will be used to investigate the effects of specimen length, thickness and width on tensile strength.Appropriate models will be developed for predicting failure. An existing statistical model for tension based on the composite acting as a bundle of fibre bundles will be generalised for the case of combined tension and bending. A new model will be developed for combined compression and bending. The models will be correlated with the results of the experimental programme and then incorporated as post-processing routines in a finite element programme. This will result in a general capability for predicting strength of any arbitrary specimen subject to combined loading. It should enable more effective use to be made of materials at higher design strains leading to improved performance and reduced cost.
