To develop a combined scanning electrochemical/atomic force microscope for use in rubbing and non-rubbing lubricated systems. To investigate mechanisms by which electrode potentials and potentials applied across rubbing contacts influence friction and wear. To develop a method for measuring the chemical activity of additives in lubricating oils.
