Summary on Grant Application Form |
Increasing concern is being placed on the noise levels of hydraulic circuits, and more stringent legislation is being introduced. Knowledge of the impedance characteristics of hydraulic components is important in order to be able to predict pressure ripple levels in circuits, and thus design low noise systems. The fluid-borne noise characteristics of hydraulic components will be investigated in the project. This will begin with a fundamental study of simple fluid components. The inertial and resistive characteristics of cylindrical orifices and diametral changes will be examined in detail. CFD simulations will be performed to provide a greater understanding of the processes involved. This work will result in mathematical models which will then be applied to proprietary valves, positive displacement pumps and centrifugal pumps. The models will be compared with experimental results. Computer models will then be developed for incorporation into an existing pressure ripple simulation package. The package will form a useful design/diagnosis tool research and for use by industry.
