Summary on Grant Application Form |
In the face of increasingly stringent exhaust emission regulations being introduced in Europe, it is necessary to improve the performance of the IDI diesel engine. There are a number of measures which may be taken to alleviate the problem in particular improvements to the combustion chamber design. It is the purpose of this proposal to investigate the air motion in the swirl chamber of an IDI diesel engine. Measurements of mean velocity and turbulence intensity, during the compression stroke, will be obtained using laser Doppler anemometry, tests will be performed at a number of engine speeds. The initial experimental data will be used to validate results from computational fluid dynamic predictions of pre-chamber flows. The effect of swirl chamber geometry and glow plug position will be considered as part of the experimental program.
