Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposed project will involve the extension of a very efficient dynamic stiffness matrix method, well suited to design use and already developed for the aeroelastic analysis of metallic wings. Extensions will permit analysis involving composite materials and will improve the unsteady aerodynamic loading capability by replacing strip theory with lifting surface theory. Efficient sensitivity analysis will be developed, calculating the change in flutter speed with respect to changes in various design variables, such as aspect ratio, spar spacing and the thickness and orientation of laminates within composite layups. Sensitivities would be used to direct a mathematical programming optimiser to produce designs of either minimum mass at a constant flutter speed, or maximum flutter speed at a constant mass. A thorough investigation into the features of optimum design will be carried out.
