Summary on Grant Application Form |
The turbulent structure of three-dimensional separated flow, particularly of the turbulent diffusion, stress redistribution and near-wall processes, is not well understood, giving no sound basis for confidence in current prediction methods. A systematic approach leading to three distinctly different but adjacent regions of separated flow was developed under the previous grant. The prime purpose of the present proposal is to investigate in detail the physics of each of these regions, along with the very near-wall region, by means of pulsed-wire anemometry. Measurements will include the surface mean and fluctuating surface shear stress, mean velocity field, Reynolds stress and turbulent transport of stresses. Particular attention will be paid to well defined and documented cross-flow boundary conditions, as these are crucial to understanding the processes and to prediction studies. An initial assessment will be made of the performance of the Reynolds-stress level of modelling. At least some nominally two-dimensional closed separations are known to possess low-frequency non-turbulent motions. Spectral/correlation measurements will be made in order to determine whether such motions arise in these strongly three-dimensional separations, and how they might be modelled, or whether they are pathological to nominally two-dimensional separations.
