Summary on Grant Application Form
The PVC is a rotating, regular, 3-dimensional structure which lies on the interface of the forward and reverse flow zones of swirling flows. This flow is present in systems such as dust separators, swirl burners, atomisers, etc. The effects of the PVC structure in some cases can be beneficial and in others detrimental. However, its presence cannot be reliably predicted. A 2component LDA system will be used to obtain time-dependent velocity measurements in the region downstream of a sudden expansion of swirling flow. Mean and fluctuating velocity components will be acquired for various conditions. It is possible to trigger the signals and produce a velocity time history which can be used to characterise the flow. Studies will concentrate on a 2-MW, natural gas fired, swirl burner/furnace system. Gated, time dependent temperature measurements will also be taken and compared with the velocity field to identify the role of the PVC in the reaction process. The experimental results will be compared with those obtained from a CFD package.
