Summary on Grant Application Form |
The objective of the proposed research programme, submitted under the special initiative 'The use of information technology in real engineering systems', is the design, construction and demonstration of a completely novel laser Doppler anemometer with the capability of simultaneous measurement of 3D velocity and turbulence data. The primary application area is for turbomachinery where such measurements are not possible with existing instrumentation. The instrument will use recently available high power laser diodes, fibre optic technology and photon counting solid state detectors combined with state of the art signal processing. The instrument is then to be used to measure simultaneous 3D velocity components on a large scale low speed axial compressor test rig (unique to Cranfield in Europe). Results of these experiments will be world leading and put Cranfield, the UK and Europe at the forefront of instrumentation for turbomachinery research.
