(1) To research optical fibre strain sensing instrumentation for the determination of strain in a number of sections of an optical fibre. (2) To use the fibre sensors for strain monitoring in modern composite materials and in novel mechanical structures (in conjunction with Westlands). (3) To conduct, in liaison with Westlands Areospace, a collaborative link programme for the R&D on the sensors and their testing in stressed mechanical structures.
