AFM will provide information on the nanotopography and orientation of novel polymer films supplied by Kodak Limited, and that the possibility exists to engineer these surfaces at the nanoscale so as to increase local biocompatibility. This could lead, for example, to a reduction of biofouling of urinary catheters, or joints used in prosthetic devices. To achieve these objectives a new prototype biologically-oriented AFM, designed and constructed by the consortium, will be required. This will have features that the present commercial microscopes are unable to offer, the most critical being real-time very-low-force imaging (<10-10N). To facilitate the data handling and analysis requirements of the project it is proposed that software developed at Nottingham will be implemented on workstations supplied by Hewliett-Packard Limited, making use of Oxford Molecular Limited and the University of Nottingham's experience in this area. These algorithms will allow the real-time manipulation and processing of the extesive data files. It is also proposed that an expert system will be developed for the research-based AFM, to further aid and standardise data acquisition and analysis, through the utilisation of Hewlett-Packard's considerable expertise in this area.
