To substantially reduce the cost of producing 3-dimensional woven structures (preforms) for fibre-reinforced composites by developing a software package for the CAD/CAM of structures which can be woven on conventional (i.e. essentially 2-dimensional) weaving machines and which can be converted to their ultimate 3-dimensional shape by unfolding, opening up or some such simple procedure.
