Summary on Grant Application Form |
Series of glasses in the alkali borate, phosphate and silicate systems will be prepared. Other prepared glasses will include MnO and FeO as components. The glasses will be doped with the Tl+ probe ion (probably other probes as well), and the excitation and emission spectra measured to identify the availability of different sites in the glasses. The optical basicity changes that these sites undergo with composition will be measured. Also, the chemical nature of the sites will be characterised (eg in terms of the relative provision of bridging or nonbridging oxygens). All of these effects will be correlated with any known structural changes occurring with composition. This is the first time that this type of study has been proposed for slags. The knowledge gained will contribute greatly to a chemical understanding of the refining properties of slags, and we should apply it to explain anomolous behaviour, such as the apparently low basicity of slags containing FeO and MnO during the partition of phosphorus at the slag/metal interface.
