Summary on Grant Application Form
To implement a system which takes an image of a person through a camera, and delivers the identity of the person along with other information. The system should show the same patterns of success and failure as human subjects.Progress:At the start of this project we had an existing model of the cognitive aspects of face recognition. This gave rise to predictions concerning retrieval of information about people. We have now interfaced this model with a front-end image-processing system which performs principal components analysis (PCA) on facial images. Information from PCA has been examined in the light of data from subjects. We have discovered that different aspects of the statistics of facial images predict different aspects of subjects performance in recognising faces. Furthermore, faces rated as distinctive (or unusual) by subjects give rise to distinctive PCA patterns. Data gathered so far indicate: (i) that some forms of PCA on facial images provide a plausible model for human recognition of faces. (ii) that the models of visual (image processing) and cognitive (knowledge) processes are compatible in a single system.
