Summary on Grant Application Form |
There is an explosion of interest in sandpile automata in self organised critical (SOC) states whose evolution is self-similar on all scales. They yield power laws typical of many hysteretic phenomena including Barkhausen noise and superconducting flux creep. It is timely to explore similar models tailored to our closely related fields and expertise: superconductors and magnets. There has been relatively little such focused work. We apply for an RA and dedicated work-station to undertake the following tasks: Superconductors Simulate flux line dynamics with the correct inter-vortex potential and various random distributions of pinning wells, initially in two dimensions. Investigate the flux-creep to flow transition. Simulate thermal de-pinning and study the resulting avalanche distributions. Compare with phenomena of the Bean critical state. Magnets (i) Model a domain wall breaking through random strong pins. Explore conditions for SOC. Compare the jump statistics with Barkhausen data. (ii) Develop various cellular automata in 2 and 3D with local anisotropy and exchange and dipolar (or pseudo-dipolar) interactions to simulate hysteresis in particulate and granular magnets. Determine conditions for SOC. Compare with observed domain morphology and dynamics.
