Supercritical fluids offer intriguing opportunities as reaction media for new chemistry. Work at Nottingham has already demonstrated some of the possibilities for organometallic reactions (C-H activation, synthesis of dihydrogen and dinitrogen compounds, etc) which would be difficult if not impossible to achieve with more conventional solvents. We have now built a prototype flow reactor which shows how these reactions might be scaled up and demonstrates that synthesis in supercritical fluids really can be simpler than more traditional techniques. The aim is to carry out the final photochemical development work and to extend these supercritical techniques to thermal reactions where the chemical possibilities are much wider. Chemical applications include ethane and arene complexes, homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis, the impregnation and activation of polymers, and hydrogen bonding.
