Summary on Grant Application Form
We propose to measure, using ion beam techniques, the surface segregation of one component of the following classes of polymer mixture:Polymers containing low molecular weight additives: various phthalates, a class of materials commonly used commercially as plasticisers, in polystyrene and polymethylmethacrylate.Partly miscible polymers: mixtures of well characterised non-crystalline polyolefines prepared by hydrogenating or deuterating unsaturated precursors, as well as mixtures of crystalline polyolefins. We expect the results of the work to lead to a better understanding of problems of practical importance including the loss of polymer properties due to plasticiser segregation and the surface properties such as weldability.
