The project sets out to model liquid crystalline polymers at the microstructural level. The rich range of microstructures introduced by processing fields have a pronounced influence on final properties and the key objective of this proposed research is to understand their formation with a view to eventual control. Preliminary studies have led to a central algorithm which enables microstructural development to be followed with time while accounting for the differences between the relative magnitudes of the component elastic constants which are considerable in the case of polymer liquid crystals. The project will initially set out to master the problems of 'print through' and 'pop out', and to properly incorporate the possibility of splay-splay compensation. It will then address the modelling of magnetically induced orientation where the experimental picture is comparatively well defined, if not yet fully understood, and of the microstructure produced by simple shear fields before moving into the more complex domain of mould flows.
