Summary on Grant Application Form |
We aim to relate measurements of diffusion coefficient and relaxation times so as to probe the molecular physics underlying the process of fluid ingress. Having made the necessary alterations to our existing 11.7 T NMR microscope and constructed a sample cell suitable for imaging small polymer samples immersed in fluid at constant temperature and pressure, we will initially investigate the movement of water in Nylon 6.6. The resulting measurements will be used to extend the current model of water sorption in this system, which has already been investigated by NMR imaging at 0.7T. The protocols developed for imaging water in nylon will then be applied to the investigation of diffusion in other systems in which the diffusion process is non-Fickian and to systems of commercial importance. In particular, we will investigate anisotropic diffusion in oriented samples. We will also study Case II diffusion of methanol in PMMA and dual-mode sorption of water in PAN.
