Summary on Grant Application Form |
A viable rational approach to the development of an organic magnet has yet to emerge. Efforts based on pi-multiradicals (topological magnets) are likely to fail because they rely on photochemical radical generation which works well for oligmers but cannot be applied to polymers. Polaronic magnets rely on a simple redox reactions which apply equally well, to oligomers and polymers but the extent of ferromagnetic spin coupling in these is limited by the fact that doping is imperfect leading to spinless undoped or bipolaron sites. It is intended to get round this problem by designing branched/ cross-linked systems and it is hoped that this will provide a general strategy for the production of organic magnets. Work already in hand is based on doped polyaryl diones. This will be extended and work initiated on related systems.
