Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposed research aims to determine the growth conditions for magnetic multilayer films with optimum magnetic properties for applications in information storage (both as recording media and as thin film recording heads). We intend to achieve this aim by characterising the microstructure and composition profile of the multilayer films at high spatial resolution, and correlating the results obtained with the results of parallel studies on the magnetic domain structure and magnetic properties. We will grow the films by magnetron sputter-deposition, and use high resolution electron microscopy and electron diffraction to study the microstructure, scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) to study the composition profile across the layers, and vLorentz microscopy in both TEM and STEM to study the magnetic domain structure. Magnetic properties will be measured using facilities at Bangor University. Since important changes in magnetic properties have been observed when multilayer films are heat-treated, we plan to devote a major part of the project to a systematic study of the effect of heat-treatment on magnetic properties, microstructure and magnetic domain structure. The results of the annealing studies will enable us to assess the usefulness of post fabrication annealing as a means of improving magnetic properties.
