The greatest potential benefits of advanced engineering ceramics lie in their use at high temperatures. In service, complex mechanical loadings must be withstood, and failure involves the initiation and/or growth of a crack. The programme aims to develop information and improved understanding of the high temperature behaviour of ceramics under cyclic loading conditions. Both 'smooth specimen' and 'crack growth' approaches will be employed, using silicon nitride as the exemplar. Endurances and crack growth rates will be determined at 1200 and 1400C under static, cyclic and complex cyclic loading. Methods of life prediction will be explored. In all cases, metallographic examination will be used to reveal the nature and extent of damage produced. Much of the experimental programme will be performed on a state-of-the-art MTS servohydraulic test facility recently purchased by the Open University. Overall, the results will contribute towards improved modelling and more reliable design in these relatively new materials and provide a much needed basis for the development and use of ceramic composites.
