Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposal is concerned with the deposition and characterisation of novelpphthalo- cyanine ultrathin films. Films will be prepared by the LB method and by self-assembly through thiol:gold interactions. The main objective will be to reach the position where it will become possible to control the two and three dimensional molecular organisation within the films by tailoring the substitution pattern of the phthalocyanine molecule. The monitoring of the mean molecular orientations within the films will be undertaken through the development of FTIR methods. These techniques, relatively new to phthalocyanine films, involve RAIRS and polarised transmission ir. The third theme of the work is the assessment of the potential of this new generation of designed films in gas sensing. Investigation will focus on the identification of molecular organisations: response relationships with a view to optimising a system for a device application. Attention is drawn to the fact that the compounds and films prepared in the work will be made available to several UK academic laboratories with whom we have collaborative arrangements.
