Summary on Grant Application Form |
UHV-inert gas condensation will be employed for the production of single-phase, two-phase and coated metallic nanoparticles (< 10 nm diameter). The kinetics of particle formation will be studied by in-situ measurements of the evolution of the particle size distribution. The effects of process conditions and source type will be quantitatively determined. The particles produced will be characterised by XRD and TEM and their thermal stability determined. The effects of high surface or interfacial area on the magnetic properties of these nanoparticles will be assessed. The particles produced will be consolidated in-situ under UHV. The magnetic properties of single and dual-phase nano- crystalline solids will be determined by vibrating sample magnetometry with particular emphasis on giant magnetoresistance in these 3D nanostructured materials. The mechanical properties of other single and dual-phase nanocrystalline metals will be measured at ambient and elevated temperatures and evidence of superplasticity sought. In both cases, the consolidated material will be extensively characterised microstructurally and thermodynamically and their thermal stabilities assessed. Relationships between microstructure and mechanical, physical and thermodynamic properties will be sought.
