Summary on Grant Application Form
It is proposed to construct a scanning electrochemical microscope allowing a scanning area of 25 x 25 mm and a scanning speed c.a. 1 mm/s. New microelectrodes will be designed and manufactured which should permit the mapping of pH and impedance. These techniques willl be applied to the study of localised corrosion; it is proposed to investigate the local changes, both in the solution near the substrate and in the oxide film protecting the substrate, prior to the onset of corrosion. Fast scanning will be required to obtain time resolved measurements in order to determin the steps leading to corrosion. Further research will focus on the study of corrosion inhibitors under high resolution. The tools and techniques developed for the study of localised corrosion will be used to understand and quantify the activity of corrosion inhibitors. The SECM will be used to image the inhomogeneity of anticorrosion coatings and to detect the electrochemical activity of the metal substrate in the vicinity of coating defects.
