Summary on Grant Application Form |
We propose to make several new types of polyradicals, which are candidates for enhanced conductivity and superconductivity, based on polythiophene and polypyrrole backbones with pendant paramagnetic side-chains. The extent of coupling between backbone unpaired electrons and pendant group unpaired electrons will be varied by changing the spacer group separating the polythiophene from the pendant quinone or viologen group. Network type polymers will be made from 3-alkanylthiophenes in which the thiophene units are held in a firmly ordered structure. We also plan to prepare ologomeric thiophenes with paramagnetic end groups. The polymers will be characterised electrochemically, by EPR spectroscopy, by solid state NMR and by variable temperature AC susceptibility measurements. Applications of the polymers as redox catalysts, as chromatographic stationary phases and as mediators of electron transfer to biological molecules will be explored.
