Summary on Grant Application Form
The design of adhesive materials, adhered structures and associated manufacturing processes is based predominantly on empirical methods due to limited knowledge of structure-property relationships of adhesive polymers during cure, when miscured or misformulated when under thermal stress. The aim of this programme is to provide a much needed link between polymer structure and its viscoelastic mechanical properties during the cure process and after cure as a function of service temperature. X-ray scattering measurements are to be used to track structure changes in terms of the conformation of individual polymer chains and the degree and extent of order in their overall organisation. These are to be combined with simultaneous ultrasonic measurements of the polymer mechanical modulus. The dynamics of structure changes and the relationship between these and mechanical properties are to be modelled mathematically. The effects of fillers on the structured change and mechanical properties are to be included in the study, as well as the behaviour of misformulated adhesives. The results of the programme will underpin the scientific design of adhesive systems and manufacturing processes that incorporate adhesive joining.
