Summary on Grant Application Form |
The programme is an international collaboration which is already established and active. It comprises 5 people, 3 growth facilities and a comprehensive spread of characterisation techniques. Its aim is the growth and study of 3d magnetic layered systems and of the newly discovered giant magnetoresistive magnetic alloys. We are particularly concentrating on two aspects of these systems which have not yet been studied and which are of major importance to the understanding of their electrical and magnetic properties: (i) the thermal conductivity of giant magnetoresistive films and the validity of the Wiedemann-Franz Law (ii) the interlayer/interaggregate coupling as measured directly by the new remanance magnetometry method. In both cases we have developed the necessary experimental techniques. We supplement these measurements with neutron diffraction data. We are also working on the practical problem of developing novel spin valve systems for magnetic data storage applications; the magnetic and neutron measurements involved in the first part of the project are an essential tool in this development work.
