Summary on Grant Application Form
Research objectives will be to employ the fundamental knowledge, relating to weak intermolecular and intramolecular interactions, that has been gained at the small molecule and supermolecule level in the template-directed synthesis of catenanes, rotaxanes, and pseudo-rotaxanes, to self-assemble a wide range of polymers with novel molecular architectures where noncovalent bonding information is captured and stored at both a molecular and supramolecular level, and evaluate, by chromatographic, spectroscopic, and other physical methods, the solution and solid state properties of the new materials and then to use the information gained, in conjunction with computer modelling and x-ray crystallography on model single crystalline molecular components to modify the subsequent design of the molecular and supramolecular polymers with respect to their molecular recognition characteristics and potential information content, prior to the self-assembly of second and subsequent generations of polymers with novel architectures. The challenge is to achieve in the chemical laboratory with 'highly intelligent' synthetic polymers what nature has achieved with biopolymers.
