Summary on Grant Application Form |
Mechanisms of anodic film growth on aluminium will be explored using a combination of marker and tracers in an innovative manner. Further, by using a very relevant combination of fine and broad beam analytical approaches, very precise measurements of transport numbers will be gained; further coupled with definition of locations of film growth, roles of incorporated electrolyte species and subsequent transformations within alumina films and space charge effects, the macroscopic filming of aluminium will be advanced significantly. In addition, local behaviour at various flaw regions will be defined and their zones of influence investigated, giving insight into the macroscopic and local behaviour of aluminium surfaces and their relative roles in governing the electrochemical behaviour, including dielectric breakdown. The research, including selective alloy effects, will have immediate impact in areas such as surface treatment for adhesive bonding, conversion coating for packaging and protective treatments in general.
