Summary on Grant Application Form |
The current project aims to explore in greater detail some interesting observations made briefly at the end of a previous research programme, namely, that in mixed -- sialon compositions densified with higher atomic number rare earth oxides, the -sialon formed at sintering temperatures of 1800C is unstable at lower (1000-1500C) temperatures and decomposes into a mixture of -sialon plus Ln-rich secondary crystalline or vitreous phases. On subsequent re-heating of the sample to 1800C, the -sialon phase re-forms by the reverse mechanism. The project will evaluate the conditions under which this transformation occurs, and compare with previous observations made on -- silicon nitride transformation made during the last 20years. Of likely commercial significance is the fact that this transformation allows easy control of all the parameters which influence the mechanical properties of the final ceramic. Thus high -sialon content promotes good hardness, a high proportion of -sialon needles promotes good toughness and a fine-grained dispersion of grains (as is produced by the -- transformation described here) promotes high strength. The extent to which these parameters can be optimized to produced a tailored combination of properties will be explored.
