Summary on Grant Application Form
The main objectives is to develop the use of electron probe microanalysis in phase diagram determination mainly by providing a direct compositional analysis of the phases present in equilibrated samples. This will be used for several on-going projects involving bismuth cuprate superconductors, barium neodymium titanate microwave ceramics and Ca-Al-Fe-silicate fused cements. It will be used similarly for a new phase diagram project on bismuth vanadate ceramic electrolytes. It will also be used for the characterisation of inhomogeneous materials in projects involving barium titanate positive temperature coefficient of resistance thermistors, surface-modified glass, electrode-electrolyte interfaces in solid oxide fuel cells and laser joining of ceramics. In all of these, compositional variations exist within the materials and a mapping of elemental distributions is necessary to be able to interpret and optimise the physical properties concerned.
